What Are Cranes?

Crane is a material lifting and moving equipment. Usually this heavy equipment is used to move goods in large and heavy quantities. This one tool has a long shape and very strong lifting ability. Able to rotate up to 360 degrees with a range of up to tens of meters. Usually this tool is often used in project work, workshops, industry, ports, warehousing and many others.

A pulley or crane is a machine that will generally operate with oil or a hydraulic system and of course with the help of a pneumatic or air system. This tool lifts the load vertically and horizontally to lower the load to a place that has been determined by the mechanism. Therefore, there are several types of cranes that are adapted to the method of work.

Types of Cranes and Their Functions

Cranes are available in several types based on their respective functions. Here’s the full explanation.

  1. Tower Crane is a type of crane commonly used in building construction projects. In the construction of a high-rise building, this heavy equipment is needed in order to facilitate the construction process. The tower crane is 70-80 meters high and is equipped with a lifting capacity of up to 20 tons of heavy materials. Having a large tall shape, making tower crane installation take a lot of time. The setting for using a tower crane is to stay where the crane is attached. The base of the tower is made of concrete and the high quality large bolts are used for the installation process.
  2. Mast Section After the foundation is planted, then the tower crane pole. Mast section is a series of several parts that become tower crane poles.
  3. Slewing Some tops on tower cranes can rotate up to 360 degrees on their axis. This is due to the slewing mechanism above the mast section. Slewing control is located on the handle in the control cab
  4. Counter Jib To balance the jib (boom), there is a counter jib which contains a counter weight which contains the load. This part allows the tower crane and tie bar to move in balance. The mass of the installed counter jib has gone through a calculation and planning process.
  5. Jib The jib consists of the motor trolley, hoist and crane. Jib crane is the part that serves as a place to place the motor trolley and hoist. This is a rail with a hoist crane hook as a means of lifting the load. The jib section is divided into 2 types, namely saddle and luffing. Here’s the explanation:
    • Saddle Jib  Saddle jib is a type of jib with a 90° angle installation on the pole.
    • Luffing Jib Luffing jib is a type of jib that is assembled with an angle of >90° during the installation process
  6. Tower Top The tower top section of the tower crane consists of a control cabin and a cad head. This is where the crane operator controls and operates the tower crane. To reach this section, workers must climb a ladder to get to the control cabin.
